About Me

My name is Ruben Vermeersch and I'm a software engineer, currently working on a PhD at the DistriNet Research Group of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. I live (and grew up) in Aarschot/Leuven, Belgium.

When time permits it, I'm a very passionate photographer, I dream and breathe by the sound of my camera shutter. You can view some of my work on my photo site or on Flickr.

I have been building web applications for almost 13 years now, using PHP and more recently, the Zend Framework. For about 9 years, I have also been involved in open-source software. I am a contributor to the GNOME project, especially Banshee and F-Spot. I'm a member of the GNOME foundation.

In 2007, I was part of the IBM Extreme Blue project. Together with three other students, we developed innovative mobile services for Belgium's biggest telco, Belgacom. Our team was chosen as the IBMbe team of Q3/2007 for our achievements.

During the summers of 2008 and 2009, I participated in the Google Summer of Code project. I worked on F-Spot. More about this can be found in the relevant section of my weblog.

I studied Computer Science at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and made a Masters Thesis on how to enable extensibility and variability in application middleware, using aspect-oriented techniques. Despite aspect-orientation being a great technique, I still believe that it often brings more complexities than advantages.

Below you will find more details and information on how to contact me. On this site, there are also some articles. For the interested, I also have a weblog, related to technical topics as well as my day-to-day life.
